Steamship Virginia V

.

The Virginia V Foundation wanted a new look to promote the steamship as a historic destination and event venue. With frequent updates and events they also wanted the ability to add and modify content easily by any employee. I designed this site using WordPress for the blog & content management, with Jquery and Flash for dynamic rendering.

Hybrid Electric Car

Inspired by a previous student who constructed a pulse jet, I decided to build a hybrid electric vehicle for my senior project. The aluminum frame, bellcrank & pushrod suspension and low roll center were to provide good ride characteristics, while the turbine auxiliary power unit and 68hp electric motor were to provide the charge & go. While finishing the car before graduation, I was only able to perform a few test runs before heading off to graduate school.

Walking Machine

.

This is a version I built of McGeer's 2D Kneed Walker, a machine capable of stable, human-looking walking. The following description from Cornell's Theoretical and Appled Mechanics (TAM) department captures it best. "This so-called passive dynamic walker has no actuation except gravity, and no control system, except for mechanical knee stops that prevent the shanks from hyperextending with respect to the thighs. Inner and outer legs are paired to constrain it from falling over sideways, but it can still fall forward or backward or buckle at the knees."
